Doc,

Yes I loved the scene in Bull Durham.  But that was a movie. I left my reality at the door.

I have problems with this on many levels. As for you suggesting it may have been in blowout games, if I was a teammate, I'd be livid. Especially a pitcher whose living, like his, depended upon production.

Secondly, it suggests quid pro quo. THAT gets really ugly.

And then there's the sanctity of the game.  Of course I shouldn't be too concerned with that since neither the players, the  commissioner, or Player's Association seem to care.

I must admit that I am greatly saddened by Alex.  The profound insecurity that has pushed him to enormous achievements has also completely infected his decision making -- read integrity.  I don't dislike Alex anymore than I dislike King Lear or Oedipus Rex.  He has reaped the benefit of his hubris and must now endure his hard fall.  But I don't revel in it and I don't see the appeal of doing so.

Player favors...even if they start in the context of games that are supposedly blowouts...are the equivalent of game fixing, Doc.  Rose's gambling never actually led to the fixing of any games, though the potential was certainly there.

It's far worse to take direct actions to help the opposing team than it is to be a guy who might some day fix a game to book jack.

Don't blame yer for disagreeing; usually that's when I post, is when I disagree with everybody.  ;- )

And don't mean to minimize ARod's misconduct, if true -- after all, he is cheating his teammates (the pitchers).  I'm sure that if somebody did the same to ARod -- set him up to lose stats during blowouts -- he'd have gone MegaTron on them.

..................

But I doubt that many *ballplayers* will have any trouble in seeing the distinction between the Bull Durham-type in-game hijinx, versus getting your feet sunk into gambling asphalt.  A lot of hilarious stuff goes on in games that the fans aren't privy to.  Stupid stuff is one thing, criminal activity another.

Just MHO.

Edit to add, if that's TopCat with the first post -- I certainly respect his judgment as to the severity of the actions.  IIRC he's an accomplished ballplayer, and his sense of on-field code is definitely worth consideration.

Would be very interested in other ballplayers' judgments as to whether this late-game tipping goes to the integrity of the game, to the same degree that it does when, say, an ML manager in the dugout has large bets riding on the outcome of that day's games, is giving inside info to the gamblers, etc etc.
