The Mets may break a new record this year, but not one that they would like to. It may become very clear just how bad the Mets financial situation got in the coming months as they are projected to crush records set for the biggest on year cost-cutting organizational swing. Current projections show that between 2011 and 2012, the Mets may reduce their payroll from 142 million to 91 million dollars. This would beat the old record by about 4 million dollars. This all stems from the teams 70 million dollar loss last season.
If this projection ends up occurring, the team would break the mark set by the Rangers who cut 48 Million between 2003 and 2004. This at least shows that there could be some lights at the end of the tunnel as shortly after the rangers were able to prosper. Hopefully, the new stadium will bring baseball back to the Mets, but they will probably have to wait some time to see success.
Due to additions in the NL East to other team’s rosters, and the loss of players New York has suffered due to their financial issues, it would be very hard for the Mets to have much success in 2012. Carlos Beltran, Francisco Rodriguez and Jose Reyes, who all started at the beginning of last season, and were the Mets backbone, were all lost. Because of this, you can bet money that The Mets will finish last in the division with a losing record. They would have to pull a major league upset to avoid such an outcome.
