The Mets finished off a sweep of the Reds July 28th moving to 54-51 on the year. They have not let the Beltran loss slow them down as they continue to be a spoiler down the stretch and will make things harder on other teams. The win was an exciting 10-9 victory which also improved their record away from home to a surprising 32-25. At home is where they have struggled as they were just 22-26.
The Mets got big innings in the 4th and 5th innings to catapult them to victory, but also needed to hang on late to seal the deal. In all, the Mets got 14 hits to produce their 10 runs. The 4th and 5th provided the core of their scoring with 4 run innings. Chris Capuano got credited with the victory moving his record to 9-10 this season. Jason Isringhausen came on late to close the door and get his 4th save of the season.
The Reds did their best, but just fell short in their efforts. In all, their 9 runs came off 13 hits including 2 homeruns. The homers came from the bats of Miguel Cairo and Joey Votto. It was Cairo’s fifth of the year while Votto added his 16th. Pitcher Homer Bailey was credited with his 5th loss of the year to even out his record at 5-5 this season. The loss for the Reds dropped their record to 50-55 this season and evened out their home record to 27-27.
The Mets went on from Cincinnati to our nation’s capital to begin a series against the Nationals on the 29th. The Mets won the game 8-5 against a struggling Nats team that is 49-56 this season. Even at home, where the Nationals are 28-22, they could not match the Mets’ hitting and found themselves behind after a 4-run first inning by the Mets.
In all, the Mets got 12 hits to the Nationals 9, but set the tone in the first when they got 4 across the plate. Mets’ pitcher Dillon Gee continues to surprise the league as he got his tenth win of the season. So far this year, he has lost just 3 games and has a fabulous ERA. Isringhausen came on late to close the game and get his 5th save while the loss fell upon the Nationals Chien-Ming-Wang.
The Yankees were also in action on the 29th after the day off on Thursday. They hosted that Baltimore Orioles who started and won with a struggling pitcher. The Final in New York was 4-2 Baltimore who improved to 42-60 on the year while the Yanks fell to 61-42. The Yankees have been tough at home with a 34-22 record, but were slowed down by a surprisingly good pitching performance by Baltimore’s pitcher Jeremy Guthrie.
In all, both teams got 7 hits, but Baltimore’s were bigger leading to the victory. Yankee slugger Mark Teixiera added his 29th homer, but Baltimore got 2 homers on the day. Orioles Derrick Lee and Mark Reynolds both went yard while Gutherie pitched a Gem to get the O’s a victory. The win was most surprising given Gutherie’s poor 5-14 record.
