July Fourth is a day celebrated by all Americans and in New York, Yankee’s fans had even more reason to celebrate as their beloved Derek Jeter would return to the Yankees of New York. Meanwhile, across town, Mets star Jose Reyes would let it be known that he would be taking it slow to return to the Mets. Given this information, one would think the Yankees would get the win and not the Mets. As luck would have it though, it was the Mets who pulled out a victory while the Yankees struggled in Jeter’s return to the big apple.
The Mets beat the Dodgers 5-2 to move their record to one game above 500 at 43-42. The win also gave them a descent away record at 24-20 on the year when away fron Citi Field. In all, the Mets got 8 hits to produce their 5 runs. After falling behind 2-0, they scored 3 in the top of the 6thto take the lead and added 2 insurance runs in the 8thto cruise to victory. Pitcher Chris Capuano won his 8thof the year and Francisco Rodriguez came in to close the game and get his 21stsave of the year.
The dodgers got almost as many hits at 7, but were only abale to get a run in each the 2ndand fourth inning before losing it in the 6thinning. Pitcher Rubby De La Rosa is credited with his 4thloss of the season to just 3 wins.
The Mets will continue to try and get themselves further above 500 when they meet the Dodgers July 5th. The Pitching Match up will be Mike Pelfrey of the Mets against Ted Lilly of the Dodgers.
Jeter’s return to the Yankees took place in Cleveland, Ohio against a much-improved Indians ball club. The Indians powered their way to a 6-3 victory. Both teams struggled offensively as the game went scoreless through 6 full innings. It was not until the 7ththat the Yankees scored 2 and the Indians four, which would turn out to be the difference in the game.
The Yankees had just four hits in all including a homerun by Curtis Granderson. Granderson continues to show his power from the plate and has been the Yankees best player as of late. Jeter went hitless in his return as he went 0-4 at the plate. Pitcher AJ Burnett was credited with his 7thloss of the year. The loss brought the Yankees record to 50-33 on the year.
The Indians 6 runs came off 6 hits including two homeruns. Austin Kearns was able to hit his first homerun of the year while Carlos Santana hit his 13th. Josh Tomin picked up his tenth won of the year and has just 4 losses. Chris Perez was able to come in and close the game to record his 2oth save as well. The win puts the Indians record at 45-38 on the season.
The two teams will meet again July fifth as NY pitch CC Sabathia is set to start against Cleveland’s Carlos Carrasco. CC is 11-4 on the year with a 3.05 ERA while Carrasco is 8-4 with a 3.54 ERA. The game is set for a 7:05 PM ET start at Progressive field in Cleveland.
