The Yankees won a close one in Tampa Bay to keep pace while they try and catch Boston. The game was won in the 9th when the Yankees rallied to get a run and pull ahead 5-4 against the Rays who are still trying to contend in the AL race with the Yankees and Red Sox. The winning run came across from a bases loaded walk by Alex Torres.
The win for the Yankees moves their record to 56-37 on the year and improves their away record to 26-18 on the season. In all they got their 5 runs off of 8 hits on the game. Tampa Bay got off to a hot start scoring 4 runs in the first 2 innings, but they were unable to get any runs in after that. The Yankees did not tie the game until the top of the 8th inning. The win was credited to David Robertson, his third, while Rivera came on to close the game and collect his 24th save of the year.
The Rays were able to get little from their offense after the fast start and their pitching broke down late to seal their fate. In all, they got 9 hits and 4 runs, but could not get any insurance runs late to make things harder for the Yankees. Pitcher Alex Torres was credited with the loss as he came into the game in the 9th and walked a couple patient Yankee hitters and ultimately walked in the winning run of the game. The loss for the Rays brings their record to 50-44 this season.
The two teams are set to meet again on Tuesday in Tampa Bay at 7:10 PM ET. The Yankees will send Bartolo Colon to the mound against the Rays Jeremy Hellickson. Colon is 6-5 on the year with a 3.47 ERA while Hellickson brings a 8-7 record to the rubber with a 3.21 ERA.
Back in New York, the Mets fell under .500 with a 4-1 loss against the Marlins. Th eMets were unable to do anything offensively and are now 47-48 on the season. At home they continue to struggle as well with a 20-25 record. In the game they managed just 3 hits and a meaningless run in the bottom of the 9th. The loss was credited to Chris Capuano who is now 8-9 this season for the Mets.
The Marlins continue to be hot as they attempt to get above .500 this year. The win brings their record to 47-49 and they have done very well away from home where they hold a 26-23 record. In all they managed their 4 runs off of 7 hits. Pitcher Clay Hensley collected his first win of the year while Leo Nunez came on late to close the game and get his 27th save of the season.
The Mets will now move on to face the Cardinals on Tuesday at 7:10 PM ET in New York. The Mets will start Dillon Gee who looks to continue his strong season. On the year he is 8-3 with a 3.76 ERA. He will be going against the Cardinals Kyle Lohse who is 8-6 with a 3.32 ERA. The Match up should produce a close game even given the Mets poor record.
